Green Coffee Bean Extract: Scientifically Proven Weight Loss Aid

Losing weight can be incredibly difficult. For this reason, people have turned to all sorts of supplements in order to make things easier.

Green Coffee Bean Extract is one of them. It is currently among the world's most popular weight loss supplements.

As the name implies, this supplement is extracted from green coffee beans.

It contains a substance called Chlorogenic Acid, which is believed to be responsible for the weight loss effects.

What Are Green Coffee Beans?

Green coffee beans are basically just unroasted coffee beans.

Coffee beans are naturally green, but they are usually roasted before being sold to the consumer. This is the process that turns them brown.

As we know, coffee beans are loaded with antioxidants and pharmacologically active compounds. Two of the most important ones are Caffeine and Chlorogenic Acid.

Chlorogenic Acid is believed to be the main active ingredient in green coffee beans. That is, the substances that produces the weight loss effects. Unfortunately, most of the chlorogenic acid is removed when coffee is roasted.

For this reason, regular coffee beans won't have the same effect (although there are plenty of other good reasons to drink coffee if you enjoy it).

Green coffee bean extract contains less caffeine than its roasted counterpart. A serving of coffee contains about 100mg of caffeine. The same serving of green coffee contains just 20mg of caffeine. Consuming green bean extract enables you to get your caffeine ‘fix’ without sending your system into a caffeine-induced hyperactive episode. And your body is simultaneously absorbing high amounts of chlorogenic acid.

What Do The Human Studies Say On Green Coffee Bean Extract?

There have been several human studies on Green Coffee Bean Extract.

These studies are so-called randomized controlled trials, which are the gold standard of scientific experiments in humans.

One of them included 30 overweight individuals and went on for 12 weeks.

There were two groups – one consumed regular Instant coffee, while the other consumed Instant coffee enriched with 200 mg of Green Coffee Bean Extract.

Neither group was instructed to change their diet or exercise habits.

This graph shows the weight changes in the two groups, from 0-12 weeks:

As you can see, the group taking the instant coffee with green coffee bean extract lost 11.9 pounds (5.4 kg), while the group taking plain instant coffee lost only 3.7 pounds (1.7 kg). Body fat percentage also went down by 3.6% in the green coffee extract group, compared to 0.7% in the other group.

What Are Other Health Benefits Of Green Coffee Bean Extract?

1. Normalizes blood sugar

Green coffee bean extract also helps to lower inflammation which has positive effects on blood sugar levels. In fact, the green coffee bean has been shown to reduce fat accumulation and insulin resistance, and may even reduce the absorption of glucose in obese people.

The green coffee bean’s ability to help normalize or reduce high blood sugar levels can, in turn, lower the risk of type two diabetes.

2. Lowers Blood Pressure

Green coffee extract may also positively affect blood vessels, which has major implications for heart health.

Doses of between 140-720 mg per day have been shown to lower blood pressure in both rats and humans with high blood pressure.

3. Anti-Aging Properties

Green bean coffee extract holds many antioxidant properties, the majority of which have been shown to slow the effects of aging.

The high concentration of chlorogenic acid present in the green coffee extract reduces redness associated with excessive sunlight exposure. Caffeine also contains anti-aging properties. It limits photodamage, decreases skin roughness and wrinkle formation, and reduces the appearance of crow’s feet.

No wonder dermatologists and skincare companies include green coffee bean extract in their products!

4. Disease Management and Prevention

Green coffee beans are bursting full of antioxidants which help fight against damaging free radicals in the body. Free radicals assist in the development of diseases and cancer. In fact, in a 2004 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, it was concluded that chlorogenic acid antioxidants may prevent the proliferation of four kinds of cancer cells, suggesting green coffee bean extract may even help to prevent cancer.

5. Improves Energy Levels, Focus and Mood

The American Psychological Association has concluded that caffeine has significant effects on psychomotor and cognitive performance, psychological well-being, blood pressure, and athletic performance. Other studies conclude that caffeine is capable of altering attention, alertness, motivation and reaction times, to name a few.
