Green Tea: Numerous Health Benefits

The most profound benefit of green tea is the antioxidants (specifically catechins & Polyphenols) it contains which have been linked to better heart health, a healthy metabolism, and improved aging.

Research tells us green tea's benefits may include:

Increased Mental Alertness
Because of the caffeine it contains. The good news is that green tea contains much less caffeine than a cup of black tea or coffee.

Protection Against Heart Disease
Green tea may help lower high blood pressure (hypertension) and keep cholesterol in check, thereby reducing the risk of developing heart disease.

Lowers Cholesterol
Specifically, green tea has been shown to lower levels of the bad kind of cholesterol (LDL), while raising the good kind (HDL).

Cancer Prevention
Some researchers suspect the catechins in green tea have the ability to block cancer-causing free radicals.

Reduced Risk of Diabetes
Polyphenols in green tea can also help regulate glucose in the body, helping to prevent or control diabetes. A study found people who drank at least six cups of green tea per day were 33 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared with those who drank only one cup per week.

Weight Loss
There’s a wealth of research on how green tea may help with weight loss. EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is the most common catechin in green tea, and it is renowned for boosting the metabolism. Some studies show that substituting tea for calorie-filled drinks can lead to about a pound of weight loss a week.

In addition, green tea may have a calming effect on the mind and body. It contains the amino acid L-theanine. According to a study published in October 2012 in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, L-theanine may help reduce anxiety and prevent stress-related increases in blood pressure.

Matcha Green Tea
Matcha is part of the green tea family. While green tea is made by steeping the tea leaves in water and discarding them, matcha incorporates the entire leaf. One glass of matcha is thought to contain as many antioxidants as 10 glasses of regular green tea. Matcha contains 137 times more of the popular antioxidant known as EGCG found in regular green tea.
